FAQ

General Shade Sail Questions

What is a shade sail?

A shade sail is a tensioned fabric canopy designed to block UV rays and provide cool, comfortable shade. Tenshon uses premium HDPE fabric to manufacture shade sails of varying shapes and sizes. These modern shade solutions are perfect for patios, playgrounds, restaurants, swimming pools, and other outdoor areas where you want both function and style. Each sail is made in Phoenix, Arizona, and shipped worldwide.

Are shade sails waterproof?

Our sails are not fully waterproof, but they are water-resistant. Although the knit pattern in the HDPE membrane will allow some water to pass through, heated air is allowed to ventilate upwards and through the material, causing the shaded area to naturally cool off rather than trapping heat in the area. The tautness and sloping height variation designed in a shade sail will help mitigate how much may pass through. Otherwise, our shade sails are mold and mildew-resistant, relieving you of the concern of funky smells and unsightly discoloration. Want to see how our fabric performs in the rain?

Are shade sails fireproof?

Tenshon Shade Sails are not fireproof, but the HDPE fabric has a fairly low flammability index, meaning it resists ignition better than many outdoor materials. However, it will still melt or burn if exposed to flame or extreme heat, so sails should never be installed above grills, fire pits, heaters, or chimney exhausts. For projects needing enhanced fire performance, ask about other commercial-grade fabric lines with higher fire-retardant properties.

How much UV protection do shade sails provide?

All Tenshon shade fabrics are engineered to block both ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation, helping protect your skin while keeping outdoor spaces noticeably cooler. Depending on the fabric and color you choose, our sails can block up to 99% of harmful UV rays, making them one of the most effective shade solutions for both residential and commercial use.

Product Types & Customization

What is a hip shade structure kit?

A hip shade structure is a pre-designed canopy supported by four-to-six columns and an elevated, framed peak, making it ideal for playgrounds, schools, and parks. These kits come in standard sizes with 8', 10', or 12' poles and include the same durable HDPE fabric we use in our sails. They provide maximum sun protection in a strong, ready-to-install package.

Do I need a custom shade sail, or will a standard size work?

Our standard shade sail options are a cost-effective solution for smaller outdoor spaces. However, if your area has unique dimensions or design needs, custom sails may be the better choice. We can create nearly any size or shape to match your project’s requirements.

Compare standard vs. custom sails

Can I modify a standard sail or pole?

Standard sails come exactly as listed on our product pages. If you need a different size, shape, or pole setup, that’s considered a custom project. For example, our standard poles are 7’ or 10’ tall with one tab per pole. Adding height, multiple tabs, or attaching more than one sail requires a custom-engineered solution.

Design & Planning

How do I choose the right color, and does it affect UV protection?

Color plays a big role in both the look and performance of your shade sail. From a design standpoint, the right color can transform a basic structure into a stunning focal point. Functionally, color also impacts how much UV radiation is blocked, with some shades offering higher levels of protection than others. Explore our fabric options to see the UV ratings for each color and choose the one that best fits both your style and your sun-safety needs.

How do I measure my space for a shade sail?

Getting the measurements right is one of the most important steps in planning your shade sail. You’ll need to take two sets of measurements to ensure a proper fit, and accuracy is key to getting a sail that looks great and performs well. For step-by-step instructions on how to measure your space, click the link below.

Where should I place my shade sail for maximum coverage?

The angle of the sun changes throughout the day and across seasons, so placement isn’t always obvious. Our videos explain shade theory and show how to position sails for the best coverage.

What size shade sail should I choose?

The right size depends on your space and application. Residential sails are typically smaller, while commercial projects may require very large sails (up to 95 feet on the longest side with premium fabric). Larger shade sails need more robust hardware to support larger loads. Our sales team can help identify which size is appropriate for your project.

Where should poles be installed?

Poles don’t always go at the corners of your space. Correct placement depends on sun angles, sail tension, and coverage goals. Our guide explains how to properly plan post locations.

Can I attach a sail to an existing structure?

Many customers attach sails to walls, buildings, or existing posts, but it’s important to verify structural integrity first. Tenshon's engineering services will outline the details for new construction of foundations and poles, however those services are limited to only identifying the force loads when attaching a sail to an existing structure. Tenshon recommends having a structural engineer assess an existing structure's capacity to accept those new force loads.

What’s the difference between permanent and temporary shade sails?

All of our products are built to last, but you can choose hardware that makes removal easier. For example, pulleys allow you to take down a sail quickly if you live in an area with snow or hurricanes. If you want a seasonal setup, ask about temporary-friendly options.

How do I maintain my shade sail?

Routine cleaning with mild soap and water will keep the fabric looking great. We recommend removing sails in extreme wind or snow conditions to avoid damage. Depending on external factors, you should plan for your shade sail to last for approximately 5-to-7 years. However, with proper maintenance and care, many of our sails have lasted over 10 years.

Fabric & Engineering

What materials are shade sails made from?

We use high-density polyethylene (HDPE) fabric that is UV stabilized, mold-resistant, and designed to withstand years of sun exposure. The lock-stitch pattern prevents unraveling and allows breathability to reduce heat buildup. Some fabrics block up to 99% of UV rays.

Do you provide engineering for projects?

Yes. Engineering is included in many projects, particularly when required for permits. We provide stamped engineering drawings for submission to municipalities, architects, and contractors. This ensures your project is both safe and code-compliant.

How are shade sails manufactured?

We use advanced CAD software and precision equipment to cut and sew every sail. Our project managers keep you updated throughout production. Residential projects require a deposit to begin, while commercial projects often start after permits are secured.
